5-mile circular walk from Western Heights to Samphire Hoe and back
4 February 2026
It seems to have been raining every day since Christmas was very little chance to get outside. One grey day followed by another. It has been so gloomy but this day was different. The sun came out and so did the walking boots. There were some tricky bits and an instance of going uphill on all fours because it was so steep and slippery. It was worth the effort to climb above Shakespeare Cliff and pause to remember the people who came to this place when they had lost all hope.

Halfway around the walk is this café at Samphire Hoe serving hot drinks and cakes. There are also toilets - very convenient! |
 |
| For anyone who isn't aware, Samphire Hoe is the result of dumping of all the material extracted during the building of the Channel Tunnel. It's now a peaceful nature reserve. |
